Questions

How PolyYapp behaves, what happens to your progress, and what to do when something is not working. Deciding whether to install at all? The FAQ covers that.

Progress and your account

PolyYapp will not start, or says it failed to initialize. What do I do?

PolyYapp needs an internet connection to start: it fetches your learner profile from the server first, and lessons, words and audio all come from there too. Check that the phone is online (Wi-Fi or mobile data, and that mobile data is allowed for PolyYapp in Settings), then open the app again.

Will I lose my progress if I delete the app or change phones?

Usually not. Your progress is stored on the server under an anonymous ID, and that ID is kept in the iOS Keychain, which survives a reinstall and can come back with an iCloud backup. The safest way to keep it is to sign in with Apple: your progress is then linked to your Apple ID and follows you to a new device.

Do I need to sign in with Apple?

No. Everything you need to learn works without signing in. Signing in with Apple is needed to create new words of your own, for the Profile screen and to delete your account in the app, and it links your existing progress to your Apple ID.

How do I delete my account and data?

Signed-in users can delete their account in the app: open Profile and choose Delete Account. If you have never signed in, there is no delete button; sign in with Apple first, which links your existing data to the account, and then delete it. The privacy policy on the privacy page describes what is removed.

Lessons and words

Why do some exercise types never show up?

In PolyYapp the harder exercise types unlock per word as you answer that word correctly. Every word starts with translation choice; reverse choice, listening, word scramble and fill in the blanks follow. The two sentence exercises also need an example sentence for that word, so a word without one never shows them.

Why did a word I got wrong come back so soon?

That is the schedule working. A wrong answer, or "I don't know", moves a word down one step on its review ladder, so it is due sooner. It never resets the word to the start. My Words shows when each word is next due.

How do I stop seeing a word?

Tap "Exclude term" during an exercise, or ignore the word in My Words. It moves to the Ignored tab and stops appearing in lessons, keeping its level. You can restore it from Ignored at any time.

Why can I not create a new word?

Creating a word that is not in the dictionary needs Sign in with Apple, and is limited to 10 new words a day. If the word already exists in its dictionary form, PolyYapp adds that entry instead. Remember that search matches Dutch only: search for the Dutch word, not its meaning.

A meaning or a word looks wrong. How do I report it?

Meanings, forms and example sentences are generated with AI, so mistakes happen. Email the developer at the contact address on the A.I. Software website, saying which word and what is wrong.

Why does my streak say I missed a day when I practised?

PolyYapp rolls days over at midnight UTC, not at your local midnight. Depending on your time zone, a late-evening or early-morning session can count towards a different day than you expect.

Audio, reminders and the word game

There is no sound. What can I check?

Word audio is streamed, so check the connection first, then the volume and the silent switch. Recent versions of PolyYapp improved playback through wireless headsets, so update from the App Store if you have not lately.

How do reminders work?

After your first lesson PolyYapp asks whether you want reminders. They are local notifications scheduled on your phone, nothing is pushed from a server, and you can turn them off in the iOS Settings app under Notifications.

Why can I not ask more questions in Guess-a-Word?

Each day's game allows 10 questions and 3 hints. A new word, the same for every player, arrives at midnight UTC.

Not on an iPhone? The same lessons run as an experimental Telegram mini app, a way to try PolyYapp inside Telegram without installing the app.
