Anki Alternatives for Dutch Without Building Decks

By A.I. SoftwarePublished How we research

Short answer

The right Anki alternative for Dutch depends on what you want to keep. All four apps here supply their own Dutch content, so none needs deck-building. PolyYapp comes with about 3,900 curated Dutch words (as of October 2026), schedules them on a fixed 14-level ladder and drills each with 5 exercise types, free with no in-app purchases today, but has no offline mode and no Android app. Clozemaster suits intermediate learners who want words in sentences. Switching to any of the four costs free control over review intervals.

Key points

  • Anki keeps offline study on desktop and in its mobile apps with no subscription, cards you write yourself and full scheduler control; of the four alternatives, only Clozemaster and Drops study offline, and only on paid tiers.
  • All four alternatives supply their own Dutch content; PolyYapp puts about 3,900 curated words (as of October 2026) on a fixed 14-level ladder from your first lesson, with no sign-up and no settings.
  • Clozemaster supplies ready-made Dutch cloze sentences on published review intervals, but it is aimed at intermediate learners, needs an account and caps free play.
  • Memrise schedules reviews on a documented ladder, but its course picks the vocabulary; a Pro-only personal list, currently for new users, takes only words seen in Memrise videos. Drops repeats words inside short games rather than on a published schedule.
  • Stay with Anki if you want your own sentence and cloze cards, FSRS tuning, offline study without a paid tier, desktop editing or one tool for every subject.

Competitor facts on this page come from each app’s US App Store listing, its own help pages and recent US App Store reviews, plus one third-party review for Drops, read on 31 October 2026; the Clozemaster FAQ, the Memrise help centre and the Anki manual were re-read the same day for their review intervals. PolyYapp facts come from the app’s code and live listing, checked the same day.

What do you lose if you leave Anki?

More than you lose leaving most apps, and every alternative below is weaker than Anki on at least one of these points. Anki studies fully offline, with images and audio stored on the device. It lets you choose the legacy SM-2 scheduler or the opt-in FSRS and tune interval settings, daily limits and learning steps yourself, per its deck options manual. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android and the web, with free sync. A card can hold anything: a sentence, a cloze deletion, an image, a recording of your own voice.

The money side favours Anki too. Desktop Anki and AnkiDroid are free, per the official site, and AnkiMobile on iPhone and iPad is a one-time purchase with no subscription and no ads, per its App Store listing.

So the useful question is not which app beats Anki, but which part of Anki you want to stop doing. If the only problem is that you have not found a good Dutch deck, a better deck may fix it: the Anki Dutch deck guide gives five checks for any shared deck.

Which Anki alternative for Dutch needs no deck-building?

All four alternatives supply their own Dutch content, so none of them asks you to build a deck. They differ in what they ask before the first review and in how strictly they schedule it. PolyYapp, Clozemaster and Memrise schedule reviews on documented ladders; Drops repeats words inside short games and publishes no intervals. PolyYapp starts from your first Dutch word with no sign-up, Clozemaster starts at intermediate level with an account, and in Memrise the course picks the vocabulary. A wider field is covered in Dutch vocabulary apps compared.

The table routes by what each app asks of you first. PolyYapp needs no setup or sign-up; Drops needs no deck choice, though whether it needs an account is unverified; Clozemaster needs an account first, and Memrise appears to. Anki keeps the control column, and Clozemaster and Memrise win on material beyond vocabulary.

Is PolyYapp a good Anki alternative for Dutch?

For vocabulary on Apple devices with a connection, yes. PolyYapp takes over the two jobs Anki leaves to you, finding Dutch content and building cards, and starts a lesson in one tap, with no settings or level test first. Each lesson of up to 15 exercises is filled first with the words due for review, oldest first, then topped up with new words drawn at random from the list. Every word climbs its own 14-level ladder, from three quick learning steps through 10 minutes and 1 hour up to 30 days. Each dictionary word has a word card with text-to-speech audio and, where the data has them, de or het, plural, diminutive and verb forms, and practice runs through 5 exercise types. The card-by-card detail is in PolyYapp vs Anki.

Against the other three alternatives, PolyYapp starts with no sign-up; Clozemaster requires an account, Memrise appears to, and for Drops it is unverified. PolyYapp is free with no in-app purchases and no ads today, where all three sell a paid tier. PolyYapp lets you add any dictionary word in one tap, and signed-in users can create up to 10 new words a day, while Clozemaster keeps custom collections for Pro. Meanings appear in English, Spanish, French, Polish, Russian, Turkish or Ukrainian, where Clozemaster’s Dutch is confirmed only from English.

PolyYapp loses to all three on reach. Clozemaster, Memrise and Drops run on Android, and Clozemaster with Pro and Drops with Premium study offline, while PolyYapp has no Android app and no offline mode. Its top interval of 30 days is the shortest of the documented schedules, there is no setting to slow the flow of new words, and new words arrive at random rather than in Clozemaster’s frequency order. PolyYapp is a vocabulary trainer, not a course: no grammar lessons, no speaking practice, no exam mode.

Is Clozemaster a good Anki alternative for Dutch?

For intermediate learners, yes; for beginners, no, by Clozemaster’s own description. Clozemaster drills Dutch sentences with one word blanked out, answered by multiple choice or by typing, in collections ordered by how common the missing word is and running far into the long tail. It adds Dutch grammar sets on articles, modal verbs, prepositions, pronominal adverbs and adjective inflection. For an Anki user the appeal is that the cloze cards already exist: the sentences come from Tatoeba under CC-BY, so nobody has to write them.

The schedule is published and strict. The Clozemaster FAQ sets default intervals at 1, 10, 30 and 180 days, and a sentence answered wrongly at any point goes back to 0% mastered, which some learners find discouraging. Pro unlocks custom intervals, unlimited play, listening practice, offline downloads and custom collections. A free account plays a capped number of sentences a day, and you sign up before you play. Sentence audio is text-to-speech whose quality depends on the device, and Dutch is confirmed only from English.

Against PolyYapp, Clozemaster wins on sentence context, long-tail coverage, grammar collections, the web and Android, and offline study with Pro. PolyYapp works from your first Dutch word and needs no sign-up. The head-to-head is in PolyYapp vs Clozemaster.

Does Memrise still work for Anki-style review?

Partly. Memrise kept spaced repetition when it dropped user-made content: its help centre documents a review ladder of 4 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 6 days, 12 days, 48 days, 96 days and 6 months, and an item you get wrong goes back to the first interval. Community courses, the part of Memrise closest to Anki, left the Memrise apps in 2024, so only the official Dutch course is in the app. The same help centre, read on 31 October 2026, describes a Pro-only personal word list for vocabulary you have seen in Memrise videos, offered for now to new users only. No way to add arbitrary words of your own was found.

Memrise’s strengths sit elsewhere: native-speaker video clips, scenario lessons and AI conversation partners for speaking practice, on iOS, Android and the web. The free plan has limited lessons, videos and conversations, plus ads, and users have reported most lessons locked behind Pro (US reviews read 2026-10-31). Pick Memrise if hearing real speakers and talking back matter more to you than choosing your own vocabulary. The head-to-head is in PolyYapp vs Memrise.

Is Drops a spaced-repetition app?

Only loosely, which makes Drops the weakest fit here for someone who likes Anki’s reviews. Drops shows each new word as an illustration plus the word, then reinforces it with tap-and-swipe mini-games inside very short sessions. Its repetition happens within a session and in a Review Dojo that unlocks after about 50 words, according to FluentU’s review; no published review intervals were found. Most exercises test recognition, and no exercise where you type a word from audio was found.

Drops earns its place for a different reader: someone who quit Anki because reviews felt like a chore. Reviewers describe its sessions as enjoyable, each word’s audio comes from professional voice artists, and one app teaches more than 55 languages. The free tier is a short, time-capped daily session with ads; the exact length and reset rules conflict across sources and are not published here. Drops teaches no grammar and no sentences. The head-to-head is in PolyYapp vs Drops.

How do Anki, PolyYapp, Clozemaster, Memrise and Drops schedule reviews?

PolyYapp has the most forgiving miss of the documented schedules and the shortest top interval. Anki’s default ceiling is the highest, and with its default settings a forgotten card goes through relearning and restarts at a 1-day interval. Clozemaster and Memrise also send a missed item back to the start, and only Anki lets you change any of it without paying for a higher tier.

AppLongest default intervalWhat a wrong answer doesCan you change the schedule?
AnkiA maximum interval of 100 years by default, which you can lower.By default, the card goes through relearning steps and its interval restarts at the 1-day minimum.Yes. SM-2 or the opt-in FSRS, with intervals, daily limits and learning steps all adjustable.
PolyYapp30 days. Mastered words still come back as lesson filler when nothing is due and no new words remain.Moves the word down one level on its 14-level ladder, never back to the start.No. There are no scheduler settings.
Clozemaster180 days, after which a mastered sentence keeps returning every 180 days.Resets the sentence to 0% mastered.Pro only: custom intervals and sentences per round.
Memrise6 months.Moves the item back to the first interval, 4 hours. No interval settings were documented.
DropsNo published intervals. Repetition happens in-session and in the Review Dojo. Not documented. No schedule settings were documented.

Can you use PolyYapp or Clozemaster alongside Anki?

Yes, and for some learners that beats switching. A workable split is to let PolyYapp or Clozemaster carry core Dutch vocabulary on your phone, and keep Anki for the cards nobody else can make: sentences from your course book, words from work, or a de or het drill. The apps keep separate word lists and schedules, so a word that lives in both gets reviewed twice. Memrise and Drops can fill the same role, but they give less to a learner who wants Anki-style scheduling of core words: Drops publishes no review intervals, and Memrise’s course picks the vocabulary.

When should you stay with Anki?

Anki beats all four alternatives when the cards have to be yours. Stay with it if you want to write your own sentence and cloze cards, record your own audio, edit on a desktop, drill a specific textbook from a shared deck, or keep one tool for Dutch and every other subject you study. Anki is also the only option here with full scheduler control, including FSRS tuning, and with offline study on desktop and in its mobile apps at no subscription: of the four alternatives, only Clozemaster and Drops study offline, and only on their paid tiers.

The reasons people leave are real too. Users have reported a steep learning curve and sync not working smoothly (AnkiMobile US reviews read 2026-10-31), and the AnkiMobile listing itself calls the app a companion to the computer version. If deck-building is what stops you, any of the four removes it. If the Dutch content is what stops you, a better deck may be enough.

What this page could not confirm

Several details stayed open on 31 October 2026. Whether FSRS is now the default for new Anki users is unclear; the manual describes it as opt-in. For Clozemaster, whether the daily cap applies to every free account is unclear (forum users report exceptions for older accounts), Dutch from German or French is likely but unconfirmed, and the quality of Dutch sentences specifically was not assessed. For Memrise, the size of the Dutch course, its base languages, any offline option and which video words can go on the personal list are undocumented. For Drops, the size of the Dutch course, whether an account is needed and whether any custom-word feature exists could not be verified. No app’s Dutch content was checked word by word.

Questions

Which Anki alternative suits a complete beginner in Dutch?

PolyYapp starts from your first Dutch word: one tap starts a lesson, with no sign-up or level test, and every new word goes onto its review ladder. Drops is also quick to start, teaching words through pictures and short games, but it publishes no review intervals. Memrise's Dutch page mentions a recommended beginner path. Clozemaster says on its Dutch page that it is not for complete beginners, so it fits better once you know the basics.

Is there an app like Anki with Dutch words already included?

Yes. PolyYapp comes with a curated Dutch word list and picks what you review, Clozemaster comes with Dutch fill-in-the-blank sentences built from Tatoeba, and Memrise has an official Dutch course. Anki itself ships no Dutch content: every Dutch deck on AnkiWeb is a community upload, and quality varies from deck to deck.

Which Anki alternative works offline?

Clozemaster offers offline downloads with Pro, and Drops offers offline study with Premium. Memrise documents no offline mode. PolyYapp needs an internet connection for every lesson. Anki studies fully offline on desktop, iPhone, iPad and Android, with images and audio stored on the device, which is one of the strongest reasons to stay with it.

Can I add my own Dutch words in an Anki alternative?

In some. PolyYapp lets you add any dictionary word in one tap, and signed-in users can create up to 10 new words a day that are not in the dictionary. Clozemaster limits custom sentence collections to Pro. Memrise's help centre describes a Pro-only personal list for words you have seen in Memrise videos, offered for now to new users only; no way to add arbitrary words was found. No custom-word entry was found in Drops, which lets you heart curated words into Favorites. Anki has no cap, but you build every card yourself.

Do any Anki alternatives let me change the review intervals?

Only one of the four, and only on its paid tier: Clozemaster lets Pro users set custom review intervals. PolyYapp has no scheduler settings, and no interval settings were documented for Memrise or Drops. If tuning the schedule matters to you, Anki's SM-2 and opt-in FSRS schedulers, with adjustable intervals, limits and learning steps, have no equal here.
